2020.09.09 18:59 rdesk BellMTS Customer Service is Painful!

The following is absolutely true and if this is a reflection of how the rest of Manitobans are treated, then there ought to be some sort of inquiry by the government, because it is absolutely shameful!
I'll set the stage: We are moving to Northern Manitoba for work and it was suggested that we contact BellMTS immediately as they only do installations on a Thursday of any given week for this area.
First call to BellMTS: I mistakenly called Bell, who then transferred me to BellMTS. The call center is in Toronto...despite the fact that they are supposed to be dedicated to Manitoba. First red flag.
Now on the phone with BellMTS customer service rep: After several reminders that I was not moving to Winnipeg, (second red flag), I was asked for my drivers license. I indicated that it was an out of Province license, to which they seemed perplexed as to why I didn't have a Manitoba license. (Third red flag). I kindly reminded them that I was moving to Manitoba, so I won't have one until I switch this over.
There were a number of other 'red flag' parts of the conversation, but I will skip to the more, what I will call "sadly entertaining" parts:
I had requested if there was a specific installation date available. The rep didn't know but indicated that they would call me back. To their credit, they did. They advised me that they didn't have a confirmation for installation at this time, and would need to call me the next day. I agreed with this. But then they said: "I'm sorry, but your driver's license isn't valid. I'm going to need another piece of identification. Do you have your Canadian ID number?" I have no idea what this is and ask for clarity. They don't seem to know what it is either, and appeared to refer to a list of acceptable pieces of identification by reading to me the list. The first thing on the list is 'drivers license'. I remind her that I gave her my drivers license and suddenly the matter is resolved.
The next day, BellMTS calls me. (This should be good, right?) They indicated that they were following up on my call the day earlier and want to know if I have "made up my mind" about the service. I replied that I was waiting for them to confirm an installation date before going ahead. Their response: "Oh...I'm going to need to call you back."
Is this normal? If it is, I'm going to have to heavily medicate before dealing with them again!!

2020.08.27 01:25 Armand9x Province of Manitoba News Releases Provincial Investments Support Choice in Child Care for Manitoba Families

The Manitoba government is investing more than $22 million in new and reallocated funds to improve sustainability and create child care spaces for more than 1,400 children and give parents and caregivers more child care options to meet their needs, Families Minister Heather Stefanson announced today.
“Child care is critical to Manitoba’s economic recovery and growth, and we are ensuring that Manitoba families have access to quality child care that meets their needs during this unprecedented time,” said Stefanson. “We are investing millions of dollars to ensure that parents have access to child care when they need it the most – so they know their children are safely cared for as they return to work and adjust to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
As part of Manitoba’s plan to expand choice in child care, the province is investing up to $8.5 million in new programs to create child care services for hundreds of children, meet the needs of under-served families - particularly those working non-standard hours - and support the longer-term sustainability of child care providers. These programs will be delivered in partnership with the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, and include:
• up to $4 million for workplaces to offer on-site child care services for their employees, expected to create up to 800 new spaces through a $5,000-per-space start-up grant; • up to $1.5 million in grants to home-based child care providers, to enhance their child care spaces, support financial stability and help ensure new spaces, to a maximum of $50,000 per provider; • up to $2 million for licensed child care providers to establish satellite locations, which will help support their ongoing operations and physical distancing requirements as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response; • up to $750,000 for community organizations to develop more diverse child care options to meet the needs of their families, which could reflect different cultures, languages and accessibility needs; and • up to $250,000 to help ensure child care providers participating in these programs can find and retain families to fill available spaces, through a comprehensive marketing plan.
“As Manitoba businesses continue to recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19, these new programs and investments in child care are critical to a growing economy,” said Chuck Davidson, president and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, which represents 71 local chambers of commerce in the province and close to 10,000 businesses.
“The removal of obstacles to Manitobans returning to the workplace is a critical piece in re-opening the economy,” said Loren Remillard, president and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. “The Winnipeg Chamber is pleased to be a program partner, offering valuable business advisory services to a broader array of applicants, which will contribute to both expanded child care offerings and peace of mind for Manitoba families.”
More information on the new grant programs is available at www.manitoba.ca/childcare. Applications will be posted and begin being accepted on Sept. 1.
“The grant program and the chambers of commerce supported me so that I can provide child care during this unprecedented time,” said Rupinder Singh, home child care provider. “This allowed essential worker families to have access to child care. I also thank the chambers for weekly mentorship sessions, and for being available if I needed advice.”
The province is also following through on a commitment set out in Budget 2020 by allocating an additional $9.5 million into the new Child Care Sustainability Trust, which will launch in March 2021. The trust will support a variety of innovative projects at child care facilities including programming and infrastructure improvements, equipment, and professional development and learning opportunities for staff, with the goal of enhancing inclusive and accessible services.
In addition, the province is committing $4.7 million in new funding to expand the Child Care Centre Development Tax Credit, in order to support the creation of employer-based child care centres for up to 682 children. This is in addition to the over $2-million investment made when the tax credit launched in 2018. Since that time, support has been allocated to four businesses in Winnipeg, Selkirk and Altona to establish child care centres for 260 children.
For more information on the Child Care Centre Development Tax Credit, established as part of Budget 2018, visit www.gov.mb.ca/fs/childcare/resources/centre_dev_tax_credit.html.
The province first announced $18 million for a temporary child care services grant as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response so licensed child care providers who were unable to work at their regular child care facilities could provide care in home-based settings. To date, 20 child care providers have accessed the grant and created more than 130 spaces to meet the needs of parents and caregivers.
As Manitoba families return to work and school, they can continue to access child care services using Manitoba’s web portal at eswchildcare.ca to find vacancies and contact providers directly.
The child care system established to respond to the pandemic has so far resulted in over 900 child care facilities re-opening across the province, offering more than 21,000 spaces. The minister noted the supply of child care has now exceeded demand as the province re-opens.
As part of the recently launched #RestartMB Pandemic Response System, the Manitoba government has provided additional information and guidance for families and child care providers on COVID-19. To learn more about the system and access more detailed information on child care, visit www.manitoba.ca/covid19/restartmb/prs.

2020.08.23 22:51 ImNotSmartAtAllTho I’m switching off Xbox and I Need a gaming pc, budget 1400 Canadian

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Some school work but mostly gaming and maybe some VR
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
1350-1400 CAD
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I’d prefer to build it as soon as possible but I can wait if needed. I would like to have it done by September 16th.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Just the PC
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Manitoba, I don’t have a micro Center but I have a memory express, I’d prefer to buy parts there but I’ll buy from other places if the prices/parts are better. If you want to choose something from memory express clearance please choose clearance Winnipeg...
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Ducky One 2 RGB
Logitech G502 Hero
Steelseries Arctis 5
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Maybe later on but not right now
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Nope
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I’d like some RgB but If I can get something better without RgB for a similar price I’d rather that.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I do not, no.
Extra info or particulars:
As long as it’s from the store themselves I’m fine with refurbished or open box products. Although if that’s the case I’d like it to be from memory express, if you want to check there then please choose clearance memory express Winnipeg.

It's been a long time since I've delved into the world of desktops (more than 15 years), so I'm out of touch with the modern technology. I thought about buying a standard gaming desktop, but considered that perhaps I could get some help from this reddit community and get something better and more customised.

2020.08.22 15:28 KIevenisms204 Show & save - our thanks to you

Like most cheap/frugal winnipeggers, we purchased the show and save book this year. Rather than a book, it was a very dated looking app which was quite buggy.
Fast forward, and the company stopped paying the developers, so developers deactivated the app. Thus making it useless.
Trying to save face, show and save sent the email below. While a nice gesture, it's no where near the extra $ spent because the app didn't work.
I, myself, and no one in my family and friend group will be purchasing this in the future.
See email below

Dear Show & Saver,
We hope you are continuing to stay well and save money.
Firstly, we would like to once again thank you very much for your patience and understanding to the very difficult situation that we were all in while the App was shut down by our development company, Direct Focus.
We would like you to know that we are in the midst of having a new development company take over everything related to our App, Portal and Website which should prove to be a much different experience for all of us, in a very positive way.
Starting Tuesday, August 25, 2020 as promised we are going to begin the process of doing something nice for everyone who had an active Show & Save Subscription at the time the App was shut down by Direct Focus on Thursday, May 28, 2020. As all of you know the App was then turned back on allowing everyone to use it again as of Tuesday, July 28, 2020 meaning that it was shut down for exactly 2 months.
How things are going to work:
If you had a 1 Year Subscription that was activated between July 28, 2019 and May 27, 2020 we are going to provide you with a physical Activation Card that will be valid for 2 months once the 12 digit Activation Code is entered into the App. You can do this whenever you choose to do so. In addition to this as a gesture of good will, when you are at our office we are going to do something extra for you over and above this that we will share with you when we see you.
If you had a 1 Year Subscription that was activated between May 28, 2019 and July 27, 2019 we are going to provide you with a physical Activation Card that will be valid for up to a maximum of 2 months (once the 12 digit Activation Code is entered into the App) depending on how long you had remaining on your active Subscription at the time the App was shut down on May 28, 2020. In addition to this as a gesture of good will, when you are at our office we are going to do something extra for you over and above this that we will share with you when we see you.
If you had a special Subscription that was originally valid for less than 1 Year that was activated between August 28, 2019 and May 27, 2020 we are going to provide you with a physical Activation Card that will be valid for up to a maximum of 2 months (once the 12 digit Activation Code is entered into the App) depending on how long you had remaining on your active Subscription at the time the App was shut down on May 28, 2020. In addition to this as a gesture of good will, when you are at our office we are going to do something extra for you over and above this that we will share with you when we see you.
You can easily find the date you activated your Subscription by going into the “My Subscriptions” section in the menu of our App.
The physical Activation Cards that we will be giving to everyone who is eligible must be picked up in person at our office. The Activation Card may not be claimed by courier, mail, phone, email, direct message, fax or by any other third party. No exceptions will be made.
Our office hours are Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Our address is 216 – 530 Century Street (where Century and King Edward split, just south of Ellice). The following will be required when you come to our office:
Please arrive at our office already signed in to your Show & Save App. Please also make sure that you know the email address and password that are linked to your Subscription. We will not be able to help you if you do not remember these.

You will need to show us one piece of valid government issued ID

You must know the email address that is linked to your Subscription otherwise we will not be able to verify your Subscription in our Portal and therefore we will not be able to give you an Activation Card

You will need to show us the “My Subscriptions” section in our App in your phone so we can verify when your Subscription was activated and when it expires or expired. We will need to see your actual phone as a picture will not be accepted.

You will need to sign for the Activation Card that we are giving you.

Only one Activation Card per Subscription subject to the terms above may be claimed.
The deadline to claim your Activation Card is Friday, October 30, 2020. No exceptions will be made. 2020.08.21 19:15 emmaleeATLAS Stone Angel Brewery 5k Beer Run

I am posting this race info because I suspect it might be one of the only 5k 'fun runs' that actually happened this summer in Canada (maybe North America?). It was my first road race since COVID and I also thought everyone would be interested in how that went in terms of physical distancing, masks etc.
Race Info
Date: August 13, 2020 postponed due to thunderstorms, so August 20th, 2020, 6:30pm
Distance: 5KM
Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Time: 26:44
Goals
A: Have fun, run under 30 mins - achieved!
B: Have fun, run under 25 mins - if it hadn't been >33 degrees, this might have been possible
C: Have fun, finish - achieved
Training
36F, life-long runner but haven't done a big race (read: marathon) since pre-kids, which means it's... ahem... been 10 years! Planning to do a marathon this fall, as with more time (thanks COVID) combined with older kids has allowed me to do more long runs. Currently running 30-35 miles per week, pace around 9:40 min miles. My 5k PR is 21:30 but that was like 20 years ago so I don't think it counts anymore? Marathon PR is 3:55.
Recap
This was a fun run, so no official timing but I used NRC app to time it. It was at an awkward time of day - 6:30pm - but that was because of the fun part - craft brew at the end! Unfortunately, it was incredibly hot and humid this week and our car registered 33 degrees C when we arrived at the race. Ugh! We don't get a lot of humidity in Winnipeg but what little we get was in full force. Felt more like 35+ degrees. Add to that the mandatory mask wearing (I used a buff) at the starting line and it was very uncomfortable even before starting the run.
In terms of COVID restrictions, the race organizers did a great job of following current health regulations. There are few cases in Winnipeg at the moment, so the risk is relatively low, but everyone wore masks at beginning and end, and the race was limited to 100 participants (looked like maybe even less to me, possibly because the original date was postponed due to thunderstorms).
Each person was assigned a bib with a colour to indicate which 'wave' to start the race. There were 4 waves of max 25 runners with 10 minutes in between. This really worked to space things out - I didn't have to run near anyone else (other than my running partner spouse) for pretty much the whole race.
There weren't any lineups for beer or poutine at the end either because the race was so staggered. But it still felt like a 'social' race (compared to say, a virtual race), so I think the balance was good.
As for the run - not only was it hot, it was hilly! Winnipeg is SO flat but this route went up and down a dusty hot embankment at the side of a highway. Not pretty, but I tried to remember the cold beer waiting at the end! Did the first mile at an 8:30 pace but the hills and heat killed my second mile, which was 9:10. Last mile at 8:38 somewhat compensated as it was more downhill. Overall, it was painful but thankfully 5ks are short so the hurt was short-lived!
Lastly I want to give a shout out to the race organizers for some awesome swag: Not only did we get a nice lime popsicle at the finish line, followed by a pint of craft brew and a fresh made (vegetarian) poutine, we got a pair of Goodr sunglasses, a running hat, a honey stinger gel, and a giant, artisanal chocolate medal! Win! Totally worth the babysitter, and I'm really glad Winnipeg has COVID under control enough that this was possible. Hope that more runs like this can happen for everyone soon!

2020.08.17 03:22 rahjahstan update on trans canada highway west of falcon lake?

really hard to find up to date info on the accident and state of travel down the trans canada highway west of falcon lake. Manitoba 511 has (only recently) updated the map to show the highway as closed since 6:49 PM. Traffic is re-routed down Highway 44 to travel west to Winnipeg but that also sounds like there are delays. Can anyone point me in a new direction that offers updates?

2020.08.04 03:55 Fincht540 Online forum or chatroom for Canadian lgbt to meet?

Specifically in Manitoba/Winnipeg. I have no idea how to meet people now that I'm clean, and it's going on 5 years of lonelyness. I actually live just outside of Winnipeg. Dating apps seem to be rather useless. If anybody could help me out I'd really appreciate it. I really need at the very least to have a new friend to talk to, I basically only have one close friend since getting clean, and unfortunately, having been in the drug scene, MANY of my old close friends are dead :/

It’s the stuff of UFO enthusiasts’ dreams — or conspiracy theorists’ nightmares.
Unpublished U.S. military findings about “unidentified aerial phenomena” could soon be made public.
But America, it turns out, could learn a thing or two from Canada when it comes to transparency about flying saucers and the like.
Last week, the New York Times reported that the Pentagon has actively investigated reports of UFOs, citing a Senate committee report that called the program the “Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force.”
The Pentagon could be ordered to summarize and release the program’s findings if Congress passes the Intelligence Authorization Act, according to the report.
It makes for an exciting time for “ardent” fans of UFOs, acknowledges Chris Rutkowski, an enthusiast and the author of 10 books about how the phenomenon has played out in Canada over the years.
“Canada is actually ahead of the curve,” said Rutkowski, who lives in Winnipeg.
Last year, he donated his personal collection of UFO reports, including 10,000 Canadian government documents and 20,000 more from various agencies, to the University of Manitoba. He said he obtained some of the documents through access-to-information requests but others he has simply collected from Transport Canada reports, available online.

The Canadian government hosts a publicly searchable archive of government records about UFOs dating back to the 1950s.
About 9,000 government documents — ranging from defence department memos about “flying saucers” to RCMP reports by officers who investigated UFO sightings across the country — are available on the Library and Archives Canada website.
The documents “show a fairly consistent track record of Canadian official involvement and interest in the subject, almost to the present time,” Rutkowski said. “People in Canada have been way ahead of the United States in the sense that we’ve had a body of evidence and a body of documentation showing official interest in UFOs.”
Rutkowski says Canadian authorities have historically been more transparent than their U.S. counterparts and that Canadians saw UFOs more as a scientific curiosity rather than a military threat.
While the Canadian government probably hasn’t released everything it knows about UFOs, he said, there are sometimes good reasons to classify information, from military reasons to individual privacy concerns. It isn’t necessarily a sign of an “insidious” coverup, in his view.
“They’re not hiding information about ‘the little green guy,’ ” he said of the Canadian government.

From the 1950s to 1995, the National Research Council studied meteorites and often relied on reports of UFOs to find samples of fallen meteorites, said Rutkowski. Tracking reports of shooting lights in the sky sometimes meant investigating UFOs, he explained. The RCMP assisted the research council by investigating UFO reports and sending them to the scientists, said Rutkowski.
The Department of National Defence said sightings of unidentified airborne objects are reported to NAV Canada, the country’s civil air navigation service.
“As far as we are concerned, we only focus on credible threats, and this falls outside the scope of our operations,” DND said in an emailed statement.
Transport Canada compiles aviation reports from NAV Canada as well as other sources and enters them into a publicly searchable database called the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System.
Though synonymous with aliens, thanks in part to Hollywood, the term UFO can refer to many things, noted a spokesperson for Transport Canada — including “sightings of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs or drones), balloons, meteors, weather phenomena and birds,” adding that the term UFO “should not be interpreted to mean something of extraterrestrial origin.”

A search for “unidentified flying object” in Transport Canada’s Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System yields 14 results.
One entry describes a flying object “the size and shape of a rugby ball” near Prince Rupert, B.C., and another cites a silver balloon-like object with “mechanical grooves” and “four blinking lights underneath” near Ottawa. In some cases, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) was notified.
Rutkowsky collects reports of UFOs from across Canada and produces an annual summary of his findings. In 2019, 849 UFO reports were filed, following a pattern of decline in the number of UFO reports in the past decade.
In the United States, the study of UFOs often takes on a more militaristic tone, said Rutkowski.

https://preview.redd.it/amqy5khodyd51.png?width=1086&format=png&auto=webp&s=61f2a86586fdcc287c7f80c1dad0dc0e41f87f9c
“During the Cold War, there was a concern that what was being seen by people was an incursion by Russian jets,” Rutkowski said. Many of those military files were classified, giving rise to persistent conspiracy theories about government coverup of UFO-related findings and more.
Recent new stories about the U.S. Senate committee report and the possible release of previously classified information about unidentified flying objects has brought discussion about UFOs back into the mainstream, Rutkowski said.
Most astronomers are taking recent developments in the U.S. with a grain of salt, said Michael Reid, who teaches astronomy at the University of Toronto.
He said in his experience, reports of UFOs are “almost always one of two things — it’s either a planet, or it’s a satellite.”
In fact, astronomers at U of T generally spend less than one per cent of their time investigating UFOs, Reid said. But the university does sometimes receive reports of UFOs they can’t explain.
“Once in a while we get a call and we say, ‘Yeah, we don’t know what it is. Either your description wasn’t enough for us to figure out, or maybe you saw something that we can’t understand.’”
That type of uncertainty is not new for astronomers. In fact, dealing with the unknown is a central part of their job, Reid said.
“There are genuinely things up there that we don’t know what they are. If you’re an astronomer, that’s your whole business. That’s our discipline: trying to figure out what is going on in the cosmos.”
And it is “pretty possible” that intelligent life exists outside of Earth.
“There are billions and billions of Earth-like planets out there. It seems pretty possible that there could be intelligent life out there,” he said. “But it’s a really different question to ask — does that life visit Earth?”
Reid said Canada takes a more scientific approach to the UFO phenomena.
In fact, scientists around the world operate survey telescopes that constantly take photographs of the sky and are able to detect an incoming comet, an asteroid or a star explosion in another galaxy.
“It borders on incredulity that (these telescopes) would never spot anything whereas the American military does. We already practise the study of the unknown in a very scientific way.”

2020.07.27 23:32 Fun_it 67 Manitoba Preschools are facing huge funding cuts from the PC government- please sign the change.org petition!!

Hello Reddit community!!
I’m here to ask for your help! I am on the board of a preschool here in Winnipeg and we were just “informed” that a huge percentage of our government funding is set to be cut as early as September of this year. The government sent a list of proposed changes that spanned many pages, and slipped this one in the middle hoping no one would notice. They are proposing a cut to what is called “enhanced funding.” If we lose this funding, programs like ours might not even stay afloat, and almost 5,000 children will be affected by the cuts throughout the 67 schools that receive the grant.
I’m asking that you please sign the petition on change.org that was started in an effort to raise awareness. Feel free to read on about enhanced funding and what our province’s children could be missing out on in the future if the PC government gets their way.
http://chng.it/G9R57Xf56H
Enhanced funding was introduced in 2009 to make childcare “affordable, accessible, and of quality.”
The Principles of this Enhanced Funding Grant were stated as:
Affordability: * Parents only pay $5 or less per session to enrol each of their children * There are no parent fees for families receiving a full subsidy
Accessibility: * Nursery schools must include children with additional support needs and other vulnerable groups of children * Nursery schools must strive to improve the accessibility of programs for preschool children and ensure they are inclusive of all children and families
Quality: * Enhanced funding has resulted in quality improvements, like new books, science kits, and art and music supplies. Purchasing or replacing large equipment, including swing sets, is now possible * Parent support programs have been established, including free parenting courses and magazine and book loaning programs * More professional development opportunities are being offered to staff so they can stay up-to-date with early learning and best practices
This is what we will lose. All of the above is what Manitoba families are being asked to go without based on these proposed amendments. And we do not accept this.
With Enhanced funding facing the chopping block, our preschool would have to increase parent fees by 100%+ meaning some parents couldn’t afford to send their children at all. Some nursery schools will have to fundraise more than $20,000 a year to make up the difference. At our school, our current goal every year is $5,000 and we barely make it.
We will lose amazing preschool teachers, music programs, supplies, the list is endless. I know that my children have really benefited from preschool- it helped immensely- and now these types of programs might not even be able to exist going forward. Please feel free to share however possible!
Thanks all!

2020.07.26 21:18 HappyHumpDayGuys Low COL cities in Canada to build a life in

Hi, I'd like to get some thoughts about where a good place to immigrate to in Canada would be for me. I am currently living in the USA. I work in the software industry and and I am OK with working either remotely or in an office. I want to buy a house and rent the other rooms out since I like living with people and it would provide me with more financial stability. I am OK with cold winters, I actually prefer the cold. I am conversational in French.
I want to be close to nature and I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on a house. I would like to spend under 225k CAD on a house. I am in my 20's and am single so it would still be important to be in a city where I can meet people in their 20's and 30's for friends and dating. I don't care for lots of nightlife -- I never liked staying out late. I want to have a strong network of friends that support each other and enjoy life together enjoying nature and hanging out at each others' houses. I do not want children. From what i understand, it appears that Express Entry should be achievable for me.
So far I have been researching the following cities. What are your thoughts? What are the other areas I should consider?
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Moncton, New Brunswick
Thunder Bay, ON
Trois Rivieres, Quebec
Sault St. Marie, Ontario
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Sudbury, ON

2020.07.19 00:30 I_have_a_poodle Investigating The Origin of the Holodomor Article on English Wikipedia

So the other day a user posted a link to the Wikipedia article for the Holodomor was posted to TIL and it amassed several thousand upvotes before it was removed for being political. This led me to look into the origins.

The Origins

Holocaust Denial

The date was 22 September 2004. A user with the IP 142.161.91.56, an address that traces back to Winnipeg, Manitoba, by making an edit to the article for Holocaust Denial. The edit in question changed an instance of the word "deniers" to "revisionists" and then added in this line:
Just as there were numerous false claims and exaggerations about the holocaust after the war (such as prisoners being made into soap) there are also false claims from some holocaust revisionists.
I shouldn't have to address the ridiculousness, but basically the Nazis tormented Jewish prisoners and threatened to use the fat from their corpses to make soap if they didn't behave. These rumors spread and and some survivors attested that this happened when in reality this was just a cruel and empty threat. Nonetheless this is a common talking point of Holocaust deniers online in an attempt to discredit the historical consensus.
The edit was reverted that same day.

Holodomor

Shortly thereafter the article Holodomor was created. Here is a link to the article as it was when it was first created. It begins like so:
The dreadful famine that engulfed Ukraine, the northern Caucasus, and the lower Volga River area in 1932-1933 was the result of Joseph Stalin's policy of forced collectivization. The heaviest losses occurred in Ukraine, which had been the most productive agricultural area of the Soviet Union. Stalin was determined to crush all vestiges of Ukrainian nationalism. Thus, the famine was accompanied by a devastating purge of the Ukrainian intelligentsia and the Ukrainian Communist party itself. The famine broke the peasants' will to resist collectivization and left Ukraine politically, socially, and psychologically traumatized.
There are plenty of sources that go into detail about the Great Famine and how it affected the Ukrainian SSR and the Kazakh ASSR and about how the leadership of the CPSU learned of the situation and responded. Here I'll just address the point about it being "intentionally designed" for the purposes of crushing Ukrainian nationalism. This is a map of the areas of the Ukrainian SSR that were most affected by the 1932-1933 famine. This is a map of the distribution of ethnic Russians in Ukraine in 1926. Now in the Holodomor narrative, there are no sources about the government ensuring that Russians got food whilst Ukrainians starved. Famines kill people regardless of their ethnicity. So, if the famine was somehow engineered then it was deployed in the areas of Ukraine with the least amount of Ukrainians, i.e. the places where Ukrainian nationalism would be the weakest.
For more info here is part 1 of Comrade Hakim's video on the Holodomor.
Following the creation of the Holodomor page, the user proceeded to edit the page for the Holocaust where they added this line:
Critics note there is an unbalanced emphasis given to the Jewish Holocaust over other holocausts, such as the Holodomor of 1932, in which up to 10 million Ukrainians lost their lives to the Communists.
After that, the user returned to the Holodomor article and gave their entry the section title "The Ukranian Hollocaust (sic)" and created a new section called "A Lack of Media Attention" which stated the following:
Since the events in the 1930's and 40's, there has been very little coverage of the Ukranian (sic) Holocaust, especially compared to the Jewish Holocaust. Given the plethora of Jewish Holocaust movies and the paucity of films dealing with Communist atrocities, very few people have even heard of the Ukrainian Holocaust, much less the word Holodomor. Some see this as evidence of a Jewish controlled Hollywood being more sympathetic towards Communism, and a clear demonstration of how movies can distort history in the public mind.
The user's last edit to the Holodomor page linked to a Holodomor memorial website created by a Ukrainian nationalist who promotes his own theory of spiritual ethnic unity of Ukrainians around the world which he calls "Ethnicism" which I personally think sounds really racist but honestly the "manifesto" is so rambly and I had to translate it from Ukrainian to English using Google Translate so I'm honestly not sure what exactly the tenets are.

Return to Holocaust Denial

Following those edits, the user returned to the Holocaust Denial article and added in this:
Conversely, some Holocausts from the 20th century seem to be almost invisible in the public mind. These include the [[Holodomor]] in which up to 10 million Ukrainians died at the hands of Communists, and the Cultural Revolution of Mao Zedong in which nearly 40 million Chinese died. Critics say the media and Hollywood are distorting the importance of events in the 20th century by giving disproportionate focus to Jewish related events, while white-washing Communist atrocities.
For those unaware the double brackets are Wikipedia formatting for linking to an article. So the user created the article, and immediately plugged it in the Holocaust Denial page while simultaneously accusing the media of focusing "disproportionately" on the Holocaust, after inserting blatant Holocaust denial into the page earlier that day.
They then proceeded to make several edits to the Holocaust Denial page, all changing instances of the words "deniers" and "denial" to "revisionists" and "revisionism" before adding this text to the article:
Like any group, there are extremists in Holocaust Revisionism (just like there are far-left and far-right people in political parties), but to define a group based on the extreme element is misleading. Most Holocaust Revisionists are sincere in their attempts to accurately describe the holocaust without allowing political beliefs to intrude.
All of the user's edits were then reverted by the admin Jayjg.

Holocaust Denial Talk Page

Following the saga of the user's edits on the Holocaust Denial page, the user made a plea in the talk for honest dialogue on the discussion of "Holocaust revisionism".
The problem is this: Holocaust Revisionism SHOULD NOT be redirected to Holocaust Denial! There are deniers, yes, but they are a fringe element just like there are far-left and far-right elements in any organization. Believe it or not, most Holocaust revisionist are sincere in their beliefs and dedication to get to the truth, but because of politics their arguments are often met with name calling and accusations. Let's not let politics become the norm on Wikipedia. I think the problems with this page will keep happening until there are two seperate brnaches (sic) made - one for Holocaust revisionists and one for deniers. Furthermore, in the beliefs section, the primary evidence that revisionists cite should be mentioned, otherwise this page is not presenting an accurate view on what revisionists are about. Whitewashing has no place in Wikipedia. - Sept. 22, 2004
The user then went to add in this, where they apparently pretended to be another anon who agreed with them, and they cited their own edits being reverted.
In the section "Revisionists beliefs" why are their arguments not listed? There are perhaps three main arguments, but someone keeps taking them out when changes are made. Example, see changes made 10:31, 22 Sep 2004 by 142.161.91.56. Wikipedia is to inform of the full truth, not push the status quo.

Aftermath

2004

By the end of the day on 22 September 2004, the article looked very much the same as it did when it was first created with the exceptions of some other users adding hyperlinks to other articles and removing the anti-Semitic bit about the Jews minimizing coverage of the 1932-1933 famine.
30 September user Shorne began making edits to the article in an attempt to restore a neutral point of view (NPOV) and make it clear that there is not an academic consensus (a bourgeois academic consensus that is) before user Xed reverted those edits the next day on the basis that Shorne was "a holocaust denier".
2 October users Shorne and Altenmann made edits to the page attempting to restore NPOV once more before Xed reversed these edits yet again. An edit skirmish raged before Altenmann put a pause to it by putting up a notice of a copyright investigation for the article's text, apparently it was plagiarized from a course in Hanover College in Indiana.
7 October user Adam Carr blanked the article and made Holodomor a redirect to the more neutral article on Collectivization in the USSR
For the remainder of 2004 Holodomor remained a redirect to the Collectivization in the USSR article aside from minor attempts to resurrect it by a few users which were ultimately reverted by Altenmann.

2005

9 February 2005 user Mzajac revived the article as a stub with text that read:
The name Holodomor (Famine-genocide in Ukrainian) is applied to the 1932–33 famine in Ukraine, the lower Volga region, and northern Caucasus, in which four million or more died of starvation.
The term is used by those who consider that this was an artificial famine, a deliberate genocide committed as part of Josef Stalin's forced collectivization program under the Soviet Union.
The nature and causes of the famine is a controversial, politically-loaded topic, and subject to debate by historians. Many maintain that the famine was a natural consequence of forced collectivization and associated resistance, exacerbating an already poor harvest. Some even consider that the concept of the Holodomor is essentially fabricated, and exploited for political purposes.
10 February user John K edited the article to specify that Holodomor is a term applied to the 1932-1933 famine in Ukraine which user Ford reverted stating that it is the famine itself. Not that it's particularly pertinent, but John K is apparently a Ph.D. in Modern European History.
11 February Altenmann tries to restore NPOV by editing the article to begin like so:
The Holodomor (Ukrainian: Famine-genocide) is the Ukrainian term for the 1932–33 famine in Ukraine. This famine was part of the larger famine in the Soviet Union, which also affected the lower Volga region, and northern Caucasus, and in which several million persons died of starvation; estimates vary.
This edit was reverted by Ford who once more stated "Again: article is about a famine, not a word." Skirmishes continued between Altenmann who insisted Ford read the talk page and Ford who refused to do so and stubbornly insisted that "the article is about a famine not a term."
26 March the next major edit to the page came from IP 83.131.9.156, which traces back to Croatia, which left links to a website called FamineGenocide.com which at the time, looked like this. Those links would remain for two months.
29 May user Sashazlv began editing the article to remove any text that displayed nuance at which point it looked like this. At which point users Irpen and Altenmann began reverting them to a more neutral point of view.
16 June Mzajac returns and inserts text stating that the Holodomor is also called "the Ukrainian Holocaust".
6 July user Scrib adds text referencing the Douglas Tottle book Fraud, Famine and Fascism.
18 July Altenmann removes text claiming that over 10 million Ukrainians died but Irpen reverts this.
20 July Altenmann changes the surrounding text around the 10 million claim.
Taking an estimate of population natural growth of 1-2%, the estimated loss of population in Ukraine would be above 10 million during these years. When considering this number, one must also take into an account the population migration (including forced resettlement) and the purges of 1933, a hardly quantifiable factor.

Major Reconstruction

15 September user Dietwald, a self described anti communist, "classical liberal", proponent of Austrian economics, who says that his ideal evening would be going out for drinks with Christopher Hitchens, Robert Conquest, and Vladimir Putin, was responsible for a major expansion of the article further cementing the view that the famine was man-made as well as adding in text that dismisses the validity of Tottle's book. At the time, the page looked like this.
17 September Dietwald edited the summary of Fraud, Famine and Fascism to say:
The author argues that there was no famine in the Ukraine at that time, but that the idea of the Holodomor was fabricated for propaganda purposes by Nazi Germany and William Hearst, to justify the future German invasion.
24 September IP 147.10.167.240, which traces back to Brisbane, Queensland, added several edits arguing against the narrative that the famine was intentional and explaining that the Soviet government acted as quickly as it could, as well as giving explanations as to why the USSR continued to export grain.
30 September Dietwald totally reverted these edits
1 October Dietwald makes more edits cementing his view that "[the] holodomor was man-made in so far as it was the result of political desicions, rather than simply natural causes". Example:
The Holodomor issue remains politically charged and hence heated debates are likely to continue for a long time. Until around 1990, the debates largely were between Stalin apologists, who denied the Holodomor either in toto (sic) or claimed that it was unintentional, historians, who accepted the reality of the Holodomor but denied that it was intentional, and those who claim that it was intentional.
15 November user Andrew Alexander adds the following text:
The exact number of killed in unknown due the official Soviet and modern Russian policy of secrecy covering the crimes against humanity in the USSR. The NKVD archives of the Holodomor have never been fully disclosed. As independently confirmed by the US Government Commission on the Ukrainian Famine (http://www.faminegenocide.com/resources/findings.html) through witness inquiry, the Holodomor was caused by the seizure of the 1932 crop by the Soviet authorities. It was also confirmed that while famine took place during the 1932-1933 agricultural year in the Volga Basin and the North Caucasus Territory as a whole, the invasiveness of Stalin's interventions of both the Fall of 1932 and January 1933 in Ukraine are paralleled only in the ethnically Ukrainian Kuban region of the North Caucasus. The Soviet authorities made sure to prevent the starving from traveling to areas where food was more available. The Ukrainian Government and Parliament have officially recognized the Holodomor as genocide.
19 November Andrew Alexander and Irpen have an edit spat over whether the term "Ukrainian Genocide" should be in the article.
20 November Andrew Alexander restores text purporting the famine to be a genocide and spats with Altenmann when those edits are reverted. Altenmann then tried to balance out the article once more before Dietwald reverted all of Altenmann's edits.
23 November Not particularly relevant but Andrew Alexander and user Kuban kazak, another anti-Soviet, spat over whether or not the province of Kuban is ethnically Ukrainian or not.
Through the rest of November there are many tedious edits to the page making it harder and harder to follow its actual development. Through the month of December, Andrew Alexander's perspective was allowed to stay more and more in the article.

Present Day

Hopefully by outlining the events of the first year and a half this article on Wikipedia it becomes clear how little bits of propaganda here and there can spiral into becoming the reactionary dumpsterfire that is the article presently. Had the article simply been deleted or redirected to Soviet Agricultural Policy or the one on the 1932-1933 famine, and had Mzajac not resurrected it, then maybe propaganda would not have spread so effectively on a supposedly nonbiased source.
Edit: I appreciate the positive response that this has gotten. I am thankful to you comrades for your positive feedback, and honestly I am just happy that I could contribute something to the sub that people are already bookmarking. To go just one step further, I wanted to link this Google doc which my comrade linked me that contains a plethora of sources about the '32-'33 famine which refute common talking points that people regurgitate when discussing the famine online. Finally, some have expressed concern about this post disappearing if /communism is banned. You need not worry because I have saved the text in a plain text file on my computer and I will be backing it up on some discord servers.

2020.06.28 21:07 Crescit Looking to Upgrade / Build PC After Video Card Fried

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
All-purpose and gaming PC. I currently play Guild Wars 2, Subnautica, CS:GO mostly. I am aiming to get 60+ FPS at 1080p when I play these games. I would also like the PC to be able to play future titles at the same frame rate and resolution. I do not currently have a plan as to what games I will be playing in the future, but if the PC could last ~5 years before requiring any upgrades that would be ideal.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
~$800 CAD but that is not set it stone. Willing to go over a bit if it means I'll get significantly more value out of an upgrade.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
ASAP.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
I'm hoping to reuse my power supply (Thermaltake Toughpower 750w Gold 80+) and my Hard Drive. We can leave out an SSD for the time being as that is something I can add in the future and I'd rather put my money towards other upgrades at this point in time. The case is also in decent shape but I'd like to see if we can include one in the budget.
I have all peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers) so none of that is necessary at this point in time.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. No Microcenter.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Thermaltake Toughpower 750w Gold 80 Power Supply, 1 TB Hard Drive, Antec (Unsure of exact model) case, Aorus M3 Gaming Mouse, Corsair K70 Lux Keyboard, ACER G236HL Monitor.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No. Not interested in overclocking.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Nothing beyond wanting to play my games at 60+ FPS at 1080p with a 144Hz monitor.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
My PC will be connected to the router with a cable. WiFi not required but not against WiFi capabilities if it fits into the budget.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I have a case I can reuse but if we could fit a case into the budget that allows for decent cable management and has a window looking into the case that would be a nice feature to have included, but again not immediately necessary.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No.
Thank you!

2020.06.26 20:07 Oppropro My dad is a Kevin

So after reading Stories About Kevin, I have come to the realization that my dad is the most Kevin... Kevin I know. This is going to be a long read, I hope you enjoy these stories. Nothing that really traumatized me or my family, we just look back at these tales of caution and laugh.

These are all old stories as my dad has not been in my life for the last 16 years. I am 34 now so you can do the math. My parents split when I was 6 and my mom, having sole custody of myself and my two siblings, dedicated her life to snuffing out any Kevin traits that may have been passed down through 'his' genes. I am proud to say I am not a Kevina and more like a 'Phoebe from Friends' kind of person. Thank you mom.

Now onto some Kevin/dad stories:

- When my dad was 9 he and my uncle (his younger brother) wanted to see who could toss the largest rock into a river near their house (this river was fast flowing and emptied into the Atlantic ocean). Dad found the largest boulder he could lift, held it over the side of a bridge, and forgot to let go. He was fished out by a neighbour.

- My dad was attacked by a tiger. My parents met in the military. They were stationed at a base near Winnipeg, Manitoba. My dad took my mom on a date to the zoo. He wanted a picture of a tiger, but he wanted the tiger to look like it was in a natural habitat. So you know those chain lines with a sign that says "do not cross this line"? He crossed it. Put both his arms in the cage to steady the camera. The tiger took one look and pounced. Dad fell back. People panicked. No major damage was done. Who knew tigers could leap so far?

- My dad made my mom trek through Northern Ontario brush to find a hot spring. On their way from Winnipeg to Toronto my parents noticed some steam coming from the forest near the Trans-Canada-Highway. My dad, a 23 year old who just got his highschool diploma with the help of my mother, was adamant that there was a hot spring near by. He had just taken grade 10 geography so he knew what he was talking about. The hot spring he found was a sewage treatment plant. (The newest National Lampoon Movie gives my mom horror flash backs)

- My dad was chased down the highway by a cow Moose. SAME ROAD TRIP. Dad saw a baby moose at the side of the road and decided this was his Disney Princess moment. Mom warned him not to get close but he wanted a picture of the baby moose up close. Well out come momma charging at full speed. My mother, who was behind the wheel at the time, had the car in neutral so it could roll forward slowly while dad ran back to the car, hopped in the passenger side, and they sped off. Momma was still chasing them for a good few minutes, which felt like hours.

By the was, this trip from Winnipeg to Toronto was for their wedding. I don't know why my mom didn't see any red flags. Love is blind.

- My dad almost electrocuted himself. When our family was transferred to a Canadian Air Force base in Lahr, Germany, we got an unfurnished apartment. At this point it's mom, dad, older brother, and myself. The unfurnished apartment had no light fixtures in the walls or ceiling, just exposed wired. My dad wanted to know if the wires were hot.... so he touched one. Blasted back a few feet and was burned, but not dead.

- My dad left me unsupervised on a 4th floor balcony with no ledge. Same apartment as before, property owners were renovating balconies. My dad had the day off and my mother had a shift on base. Mom told dad make sure the patio door is shut and locked so brother (3 or 4 at the time) and I (just turned 2) don't go on the balcony. She comes home after work to see dad sleeping on the couch, balcony door wide open and me looking over the ledge. Mom had to give me the most calm 'COME GIVE MOMMY A BIIIIG HUG' she could muster while screaming internally. Dad didn't know what was wrong.

- My dad has crashed EVERY vehicle he has owned. Every car, truck, dirt bike, motorcycle, boat, you name it. He is the reason Ontario premiums are high. Once he crashed the family car on a quiet pedestrian road. Going 30k. Into a parked tow truck. In front of a house where a large Greek family has having a party. My older brother and I were in the car. It was a write off. A Greek grandma gave my brother and I candy.

- My dad has had two kitchen fires (that I know of) and one wasn't even in his own house. We were visiting friends of the family we met on base in Germany. These people are still in my life and they are considered Aunt/Uncle and cousins. My dad went to make fries and while waiting for the pot of oil to heat up, he took a nap. Same thing happened in his own apartment years later. Icing on the cake? My dad was a Toronto fire fighter at the time! He's retired now so Toronto citizens, you can sleep well.

There are way more stories but this is enough to get my point across. It is kind of therapeutic to get these off my chest and into the internet.

tl;dr: my dad is an idiot

2020.06.09 20:47 IceDragon77 My friend is in serious trouble with an abusive boyfriend, and I'm wondering if I should call the cops before she becomes another statistic.

I know there's a member of the Winnipeg Police that frequently visits this reddit page, and I was hoping to get some advice.
My friend started dating this guy in February, and he was fine at first. Super control freak though, I haven't been able to visit my friend since because she's not allowed to have male friends anymore. He said to her that if I ever go over there he's going to put me in the hospital. In March things got even worse, he moved all his stuff in without asking and they've been living together since, even though it's against Manitoba Housing to have someone move in for over a month. So he's been staying there without paying rent. My friend just called me today because he left to go buy weed and she completely broke down crying and saying how bad things have been and she's too scared to do anything. Turns out he's an ex-convict. He's been to jail multiple times for assault with a weapon and drug possession. He's been abusive towards her and the kids, but she's too afraid to do anything because he has anger issues. He's put holes in walls, he forces her to have sex when she doesn't want to, he even almost broke her wrist one time. He yells at her and her kids, calling them "retard" and stuff. He pushed one of her kids down the stairs one time and dumped water on her. He makes my friend pay $600 a month to someone that he owes money to. He tells my friend if she says anything he's just spin the story and make her seem like a terrible parent and have CFS take the kids away and have Manitoba Housing kick her out onto the street. So she's been too afraid to do anything. She wants him gone but doesn't want it to turn into a big thing. I told her its impossible for that to happen because he has free rent, and you're paying for his loans, and he has total control over you. He's never going to give that up easy. She says she's too afraid to call the cops. She's scared he's just going to come back when there are no police and break in (he knows how to break in to houses). So what do I do? Do I call the cops anyways and tell them my friend's situation? Will Manitoba Housing kick her out? I want to help but I don't want to make the situation worse.
